Nassau Bahamas / Paradise Island

New Providence Island, whose capital city is Nassau, and Paradise Island have a long and fascinating history. Although early natives may have settled here well over 1000 years ago, very little is know about these early inhabitants. Europeans came to settle the islands in the 17th century, and their extensive influence is plain to see. During the last part of the 17th century, King Charles II provided for settlers to build the first fort and city there and they named it Charlestown after the king. Shortly after it was built, the Spanish burned it to the ground in one of the many naval battles that took place in this region.

The city was rebuilt in 1695 and named Nassau after King William III (who was Prince of Orange-Nassau). Although attacked and plundered many times by the Spanish and French, Nassau has survived as the capital city of New Providence Island to this very day. You can still witness remaining buildings and other structures surviving from various time periods, such as stunning examples of Victorian architecture.

In addition to their turbulent colonial history as a prized location for European nations building their empires, Nassau and Paradise Island have also had a long history as a notorious pirate base. For nearly two centuries, pirates (such as Edward Teach, better known has Blackbeard) have dominated the land and water around the Bahamas. Another infamous pirate from this time period is “Calico Jack” Rackham who is believed to have created the legendary skull and crossbones flag that is now known across the world as the symbol for piracy.
